They’re built as these sealed-up boxes, and the second a heating element burns out—usually around the five-year mark—the whole thing becomes a giant piece of scrap metal. Instead of welding the heating tube right into the frame, we made the infrared part its own separate piece. Think of it like a lightbulb. When the bulb goes, you don’t throw away the whole lamp; you just pop in a new bulb.
How the “Swap” Actually Works
We basically separated the part that gets hot from the frame that holds it up. We used simple mounting brackets and quick-connect terminals to make it happen. Here is why this matters: infrared elements live a hard life. They go from freezing to scorching and back again, over and over. Eventually, that stress kills the filaments. It’s just physics. By making the element modular, we’ve isolated the part that’s guaranteed to wear out from the hardware that should last a lifetime.
The Trade-off (Because Nothing is Perfect)
Now, there is a catch. When you move away from a permanent solder joint to a connector, you get a little bit of electrical resistance. To fix that, we used high-temperature alloy terminals. They stop oxidation and keep the power flowing steady. The only real “rule” here is that you’ve got to make sure the terminals are clicked in tight. If they’re loose, you’ll get some overheating, and nobody wants that. But compared to tearing your entire bathroom wall apart to replace a fixture? It’s a no-brainer.
Fixing It in Five Minutes
When your heater finally hits that 5-year wall, you don’t need a contractor. You just:
- Flip the power off.
- Pop the retaining clips.
- Slide out the dead tube.
- Slide in a new one. That’s it. Your towels are warm again, and your trash can stays empty.
