
Why Most Infrared Heaters Die (And How We Stopped It)
Here is the truth about infrared heaters: the heating element usually isn’t what kills them. It’s the environment. If you’re working in a shop or a plant, you’ve got water splashes and condensation everywhere. That moisture sneaks in, triggers a short, or just eats away at the electrical contacts until the whole thing quits. To fix this, we built our best-selling units to an IPX5 standard.
What IPX5 actually means for you
In plain English? It means you can hit the unit with water jets from any angle and it won’t flinch. We did this by sealing the housing and using gaskets that act like a shield for the internal wiring. But it’s not just about avoiding a sudden pop and a flash of light. It stops something called “creepage,” where moisture creates a tiny, invisible path for electricity to travel where it shouldn’t. That’s usually what burns out components long before their time.
The hidden danger of mist
Direct splashes are obvious. Mist is the real killer. Those tiny droplets find every little gap and settle right on the quartz tube or the reflectors. When the heater kicks on, that water vanishes instantly, but it leaves behind mineral deposits. These deposits create “hot spots.” The glass gets stressed, it gets uneven, and eventually, it just cracks. To stop that, we added anti-mist coatings and drainage paths that basically tell the water, “Get out.” This keeps the reflector clean, which means the heat actually goes toward your workpiece instead of soaking into the heater’s own frame.
A few things to keep in mind
Now, there’s a trade-off. Because the unit is sealed tight to keep water out, heat doesn’t escape the housing as easily as it does in those cheap, open-frame heaters. If you cram these units into a tiny, closed cabinet, you might cook the control electronics. You’ve got to give them some breathing room. Make sure your mounting bracket has plenty of clearance for airflow. Just use high-temp leads, leave a gap for the air to move, and these things will take a beating in a wet shop without losing a bit of power.
