
How to actually stop your bathroom mirror from fogging up
We’ve all been there. You step out of a hot shower, reach for the mirror to shave or do your makeup, and you’re staring at a wall of white mist. It’s annoying. The reason it happens is simple: warm, wet air hits the cold glass and clings to it. To fix this, we use short-wave infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of trying to heat up the whole room (which is a waste of time), these lamps beam energy straight into the glass. It keeps the mirror warm enough that the moisture just can’t stick.
Getting the wattage right
You can’t just grab any lamp and hope for the best. A tiny powder room is a different beast than a massive master bath with a walk-in shower. If you’ve got a small mirror—under 60cm—you’re usually fine with something in the 100W to 250W range. But if you’re dealing with a big space where the steam builds up fast, you’ll want to jump up to 500W or more. Here is the tricky part: if you go too low, the glass won’t warm up fast enough and you’ll still be wiping the mirror with a towel. But if you go overboard, you’re just wasting electricity. Worse, if the heat is too concentrated in one spot, you could actually crack the glass.
Setting it up
Most of the time, quartz halogen tubes are the way to go because they heat up almost instantly. You probably don’t want these running 24/7, so it’s a smart move to hook them up to a timer or a humidity sensor. Placement is everything. You want the lamp centered behind the mirror with a bit of breathing room. If it’s touching the glass, you’ll get “hot spots.” Too far away? The IR energy drops off, and you’ll end up with a clear center but foggy edges.
One last thing to check
High-wattage lamps are great because they clear the fog in a snap, but they pull a lot of power. Before you install a few of these in one bathroom, double-check your circuit load. You don’t want to be the person who trips the breaker every single morning right as you’re getting ready for work.
