We’re seeing a big move toward carbon fiber infrared (IR) lamps. It’s not just about following a trend, though. It’s about the reality of lead-free mandates and the push for green energy. The secret is in the energy transfer. While convection tries to heat the air around the part, carbon fiber goes straight for the target.
The magic of the heat
Here is the cool part: carbon fiber filaments have almost zero thermal inertia. In plain English? They go from ice-cold to full blast in milliseconds. You can stop worrying about those endless pre-heating cycles that eat up your morning. You aren’t wasting power heating up a giant metal box; you’re only heating the substrate. It’s efficient. It’s fast. And it’s not just about speed. The way these lamps emit heat is specifically tuned. It sinks deep into the coatings used for photoresist curing and lead-free soldering. You get the core of the material up to temp without accidentally torching the surface.
Cleaning up the process

The catch (because there’s always one)
Look, I won’t tell you it’s perfect. You get incredible heat density, but these lamps are fragile. They aren’t like stainless steel heaters that you can just kick around. If your fab floor vibrates too much or your mounts are shaky, those filaments will snap. Period. Also, because the heat is so concentrated, you can’t slack on the cooling.
